Can I pause payments on my publication on Substack?

Yes! When you pause:

  • The billing cycles for your subscribers will be frozen.
  • New readers will not be able to purchase a paid subscription plan.
  • Existing paid subscribers won't be charged.

There is no time limit when you pause your publication; when you're ready to start publishing again, you can unpause to resume the billing cycles of your paid subscribers.

Head to your Settings and click on Payments in the left navigation bar. Click on "Pause" next to "Pause subscription billing" to pause your publication's current paid subscriptions.

After you pause payments, you'll see the option to schedule a date when your publication can resume payments. Click "Choose date to unpause" then select a date from the calendar. Select "Pause until xxxx-xx-xx" and your publication will automatically resume payments on that date so that new readers can purchase a paid subscription and existing paid subscriptions will continue from where they left off.

Note: Your current paid subscribers will not be notified when you pause payments on your publication.
