Live video on Substack via RTMP

Note: This feature is in beta and only available for select creators who use live video on Substack.

You can stream to the Substack app as well as your Substack website using Streamyard and OBS via our RTMP integration.

You'll need to decide whether you want to stream a portrait video or a landscape video. This guide will show you how to do both.

As long as you can stream to MUX and insert a stream key, this feature will work by following the steps below.

Streaming a landscape video via RTMP

  1. Generate a stream key and server URL in your writer dashboard.
  2. Use this stream key and server URL to connect a 3rd party streaming tool like Streamyard to Substack.
  3. Once the stream key and server URL are specified, simply go live or schedule the live for a future date/time. The stream will show up at the top of your publication website as well as in the app. In the app, viewers can rotate their phones for a more immersive experience.

Streaming a portrait video via RTMP

First, you'll need to set the video dimensions:

1. Open OBS and go to Preferences.

2. Select Video.

3. Adjust the base and output resolution to 1080x1920. Do not set it to 1920x1080.

4. Save these changes.

Next, head to Substack to follow these steps:

1.  On your publication's dashboard, select "New post" and then "New live video". Enter a title, select your audience, and click "Generate stream key". You can also schedule the stream for a future date/time. Scheduled streams can always be accessed from "New live video."

2. When you're ready to go live, copy the stream key and head to OBS. Click on Stream found in your settings.

3. Click on Service. From the drown-down menu, select "Show all" and then "MUX".

4. Enter the stream key you generated from your live video post on your Substack publication.

5. Click OK.

6. Start the stream.
