How to publish a post from the Substack app

Publishing a new post is available on the Substack iOS and Android apps. If you'd like to learn more about how to publish a post from a desktop, please follow these steps.

Follow these steps to publish and send a post to your subscribers directly from the Substack app:

  1. Open the Substack app and tap the orange “plus” button on the Home screen. Select “Post”.

2. Write a draft post by directly typing into the editor. As you type, you’ll see various formatting and embed options.

  • Select the plus icon to add an image from your photo library or take a photo using your device. You can also add a divider line to create sections in your post.

  • Select the link icon to add a link to your draft or hyperlink specific text.

  • Select the bullet points icon to format text as a bulleted or numbered list. Once you add a bulleted or numbered list, you’ll see the options to indent your lists.

  • Select the quotes icon to format text as a block quote.

  • Select the arrow icon to undo or redo previous actions.

  • Select the keyboard icon to view your draft post without the device keyboard blocking the screen.
  • To access formatting options on the app editor, highlight the text. You’ll be able to select from various text sizes, hyperlinks, bolding, italics, strikethrough, and code options.

Note: New drafts started in the app editor will be autosaved, but you can only edit one draft at a time. Drafts started in the app are only saved to the app. We’ll work on syncing in-app drafts to the web dashboard in the coming months.

  1. Once you’re ready to publish your post, select “Next”.

If you have payments enabled on your Substack

From the “Audience” drop-down menu, select who you’d like to email or notify via a push notification.

  • Everyone: Your post will be sent to free and paid subscribers and appear as a free post on the Substack app and the web.
  • Free subscribers only: Your post will be emailed to free subscribers and will not appear in your publication’s archives.
  • Paid subscribers only: Monthly, annual, and founding member subscribers will receive this post.
  • Founding members only: Only founding members will receive this post if you’ve enabled this subscription tier.

If you have a free Substack, the post will be sent to your subscribers and appear as a free post on your publication.

The Substack app editor allows you to notify subscribers via email and push notifications. If you’d prefer to publish the post to the web, tap the toggle to the left.

Note: Currently, published posts can’t be edited in the Substack app. However, you can edit any published posts on the web version of Substack.

Things to note:

  • For free Substacks, the default comment audience for your posts will be “Everyone”. You can change this on the web. For paid publications, who can comment on the post depends on whether you’ve selected the post for paid subscribers or founding members only.
  • Scheduling posts and post previews will be coming soon to the app editor.
  • Only text posts can be drafted and published in the app– video and podcast posts are coming soon.
  • Most embeds and button types available on the web are not available on the app editor yet.
